Department of Microbiology

Microbiology – Most important and fascinating field in Biology; Courses offered comprise of the basic and applied aspects of various branches of Microbiology (viz., Medical, Agricultural, Environmental, Food, Industrial Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, etc.).     B.Sc. MICROBIOLOGY A candidate shall be admitted to the course provided he/she has passed a +2 with Biology subject
    M.Sc. APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY A candidate shall be admitted to the course provided he/she has passed a B.Sc.,in Zoology/Botany/Chemistry/Biochemistry/Microbiology/Home Science any other branch of Lifesciences of any recognized University.
    M.Phil. MICROBIOLOGY A Master's degree in Microbiology/ Applied Microbiology/ Medical Microbiology/Industrial Microbiology with a minimum of 55% of marks.

     Participated in the Cleanliness Programme of Medavakkam Social Welfare Building and an awareness rally on Cleanliness at Medavakkam on 22.06.2016.

     Participated in the Awareness Rally at Marina Beach under the Gandhiji’s Clean India Program and a drive was conducted, to hear the grievances among the Women and senior Citizens, in Medavakkam on 23. 06.2016.

     Participated in the Campaign organised with regard to “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held on 26. 06.2016.

     Participated in the Rally on “Green Kalam’’ peace procession conducted under the leadership of its President Mr. Vivek. The procession was carried out from Kannagi Statue in the Marina Beach Road till Queen Mary’s College. Participation in the procession fetched one hundred tree saplings for the college.

     Cleaning the premises of Library and Panchayat Office within the Medavakkam Village limits and Rally on Road Safety, organized between Medavakkam and Medavakkam Koot Road on 25.06.2016.

     Participated in the Debate on the topic “Eradication of Drinking and Usage of Drugs”, held at D.J Vaishnava College, Arumbakkam in the presence of top police officials on 26.06.2016.

     Visited and helped the underprivileged students in the Bala Vihar School, Kilpakkam on 27.06.2016.

     Participated in SWACHH BHARAT PAKHWADA-2016 organised by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited which insisted to bring in the habit of clean India among the Younger Generation.

     Participated in the discussion with the Principal, Asan Memorial College and Mr. Baskar, Chief Secretary, NSS on 28.06.2016.

  • Students of III B.Sc Microbiology participated in various competitions in the programme “Micromasturi – 2015”, conducted at DG Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, on 4th September 2015.

  • Four faculty members and four students of II M.Sc Applied Microbiology attended an International Seminar on New Horizons in Microbiology – Challenges and Prospects, organized by Post Graduate and Research Department of Microbiology, Mohammed Sathak College of Arts & Science, Chennai on July 31st 2015.

  • I M.Sc Applied Microbiology students attended ‘A National conference on “Biomass, Bioenergy and Bioremediation” organized by Department of Microbiology, Madras Christian College, Chennai on 23rd& 24th February 2015.

  • Five students from B.Sc and M.Sc Microbiology won Ist prize in Pookalam competition in Onam Celebrations held on 25.08.2015 at our college.

  • Nine students from II M.Sc and M.Phil Microbiology attended a seminar on “Current Trends in Biology” on 5th Feb 2015 organized by Centre for International Co- operation in Science (CICS) at Triple Helix Auditorium of Central Leather Research Institute, Adayar.

  • Four students of II M.Sc Applied Microbiology participated in a National Conference on “Frontiers in Translational Microbiology” – SANMICROFEST – 2015 on 8th January 2015 organized by PG department of Microbiology, Sri Sankara Arts & Science College, Enathur, Kancheepuram.

  • 22 students of II B.Sc Microbiology participated in various competitions in “Swarnotsav-Micromatsuri– 2014, organized by P.G Department of Microbiology, at Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Vaishnav College on 01.10.2014.Ms.Muthulakshmi and Terasa Divya won III prize in T-Shirt painting. Ms.K.Vishnupriya and Haridharini Doss won II prize in Rangoli.

  • Ms. Manisha Elizabeth Varghese and Kowsalya Swaminathan of II B.Sc Microbiology won First Prize in Quiz competition in Microfest 2014, conducted by Department of Microbiology, Ethiraj College on 18th August 2014.

  • Ms. Kiran Srinivasan of I B.Sc Microbiology participated in Essay writing competition conducted on the occasion of “Geneva Convention Day” by Indian Red Cross Society, Egmore on 01.08.2014.

  • Ms. Mullai.T of I B.Sc Microbiology participated in a debate on ‘Urathhu Solungal” programme in Pudhyiya Thalaimurai Channel on 06.01.2014.

  • Seven students from II M.Sc Microbiology attended a seminar programme Bioconsortium 2014, a regional seminar on “Prospects of Microbiology in the Next Decade” organized by the Department of Microbiology, Madras Christian College, on 18th Feb 2014.They also participated in Quiz and JAM conducted during the programme.

  • 2013 - 14

  • Seven students of M.Phil Microbiology attended a National Conference on “Innovations in Science and Technology for Inclusive Development” organized jointly by SRM University with Indian Science Congress Association from 12th to 13th December-2013 held at SRM Medical College, Kattankolathur campus.

  • Research project submitted by Dr.S.Thiyagarajan and Ms.Tamilselvi, student of II M.Sc. Microbiology for the academic year 2012-13 was approved by Tamilnadu State Council for Science & Technology in April-2013 and a sum of Rs.10,000/ (Rupees ten thousand) was sanctioned towards financial support.

  • Five students of M.Phil. Microbiology attended a Regional Seminar on “Managing Microbes” organized by the Dept. of Microbiology, Dr.MGR Janaki College of Arts & Science for Women, Adyar, Chennai held on 11th & 12th September 2013.

  • Six students of M.Phil. Microbiology attended a two day National Conference on “Microbiology & Biotechnology – Rising to the Challenges of Times” organized by the Dept. of Microbiology of Madras Christian College, Tambaram, Chennai on 18.02.2013 & 19.02.2013. Ms. Madhumathi of M.Phil. Microbiology presented a paper on “Synthesis of Silver nanoparticles of Papaya and Sapota Fruit Extract and its Antimicrobial Activity”

  • Mr.Mohammed Riyazuddin (III B.Sc.) and Mr.Venkata Sujith (II M.Sc) won the first prize in Model presentation during the intercollegiate programme - Expo 2013, organized by Pricne Shri Venkateswara College of Arts & Science.

  • Five students of M.Phil. Microbiology attended a regional seminar on “Dodge the Dengue” organized by the Dept. of Microbiology of Dr.MGR Janaki College for Women, Adyar, Chennai on 07.02.2013.

  • Seven students of I M.Sc. Applied Microbiology attended a two day National Symposium organized by Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) on 17.12.2012 & 18.12.2012 held at Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai.

  • Four students of M.Phil. Microbiology participated in the National Conference on “Recent Scenario in Emerging Arboviral Infections” organized by Dept. of Microbiology of Prof.Dhanapalan College, Kelambakkam, Chennai on 14.12.2012 & 15.12.2012. Ms.S.Subha of M.Phil. Microbiology presented a research paper on “Community prevalence of viral STIs in Chennai”.

  • The research project proposal submitted by Dr.S.Thiyagarajan and Ms.K.Divya (student of II M.Sc. Applied Microbiology) has been approved by Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST) and sanctioned a fund of Rs.6000/.

  • Students of M.Sc. Applied Microbiology participated in the Pookalam competition conducted on the eve of Onam Celebration orgnised by Asan Memorial Educational institutions on 23.08.2012 and won the First Prize.

  • Seven students of M.Phil.   • The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology visited various schools at Higher Secondary level and done the following activities.

  • To the Lifescience students Power point presentations were given about the scope of the course, Department and College. 750 pouches containing scale, pens and a wish card printed with name of the college were distributed to lifescience students of schools at Medavakkam,Pallikaranai, Sholinganallur, Velachery and Tambaram .

  • An Exhibition and Career Guidance Programme on “Prospects of Enchanting Lifesciences with a special focus on Microbiology” was organized by the P.G & Research Department of Microbiology, Asan Memorial College of Arts & Science, Jaladampet, Chennai 100 on 15.10.2015 and 16.10.2015.The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr.V.R.Prabavathy, Principal Scientist, M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai 600 113. The exhibition was well attended by around 700 students from various Government schools, Matriculation schools and CBSC at Higher secondary level in South Chennai. The Exhibition helped the students to widen their knowledge with respect to positive approach of Lifesciences with a special focus on Microbiology and exploring microbes for healthy human life.

  • On behalf of our college Dept. of Microbiology distributed 141 notebooks and 75 calculators to the higher secondary students of Taramani Govt. Higher secondary school on 14.01.2016 as a flood relief.

  • The P.G & Research Department of Microbiology conducted Admission Promotional activities in the month of 23.05.2016 soon after the declaration of higher secondary results. The Pamphlets, Wish card, Pouches had been distributed in 15 schools in the stretch of Velachery to Tambaram, Sholinganallur, Guindy etc.

  • A two days State Level Workshop on “Curriculum Based Essential Molecular Techniques” is organized by P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology, Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, Chennai in associated with Himedia Laboratory private limited, Mumbai from 27.02.2015 to 28.02.2015 for the students of Lifesciences. Dr.N.Vasudeven, Director, Centre for Environmental Studies, Anna University, Chennai inaugurated the workshop. During the inaugural session, workshop manual was released by the chief guest and received by Dr.G.Rajasekaran, Zonal Manager of Himedia Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. Around 75 graduate students of Lifesciences across the State are attended the workshop.

  • 31 students of B.Sc Microbiology underwent an training programme for three days (07.10.2013 to 09.10.2013) on “Diagnostics Techniques in Microbiology & Immunology” conducted by Sachika, Institute for Biomedical Technology, Chennai.

  • A three days training programme was arranged for ive students of I M.Sc. Applied Microbiology participated in a training programme on “Tools and Techniques in Bioinformatics” at BIOZONE Research Center, Teynampet, Chennai from 16.12.2013 to 18.12.2013.

  • The Department organized An Exhibition cum competitions “Exploring the Potentials of Fascinating Life Sciences with a special focus on Microbiology” for the students of Life sciences of Schools and colleges on 9th & 10th of January 2014. Nearly 450 students of Life Sciences from 8 schools have been benefitted. Dr.Thangam Menon, Professor, & Head, Dept of Microbiology, Director, Dr,ALM PGIBMS inaugurated the programme.

  • A Guest Seminar was organized for the U.G & P.G students of Microbiology on 22.01.2014. Dr.Ellanchezhian Manickan, Professor, Dept of Microbiology, Dr.ALM PGIBMS delivered a lecture on “Hepatitis B Virus and development of anti HBV drugs from Indian Medicinal Plants”.

  • A two days Workshop on “Advanced Methods in Molecular Biotechnology” was organized jointly with Medox Biotech , Chennai for the students of II M.Sc. Applied Microbiology on 31st Jan & 1st Feb 2014.

  • An industrial visist to Hatsun Dairy Industries, Red Hills was organized for all the students of Microbiology on 8th Feb 2014.

  • A two days workshop on “Systematic Medical Bacteriology” was organized for the students of I M.Sc. Microbiology on 18th & 19th February 2014. Dr.Latha Sriram, Professor, Department of Microbiology, Madras Medical College conducted the workshop as resource person.

  • A Guest Seminar was organized for the U.G, P.G and M.Phil students of Microbiology on 22.02.2014. Dr.P.Rajendran, Professor, Dept of Microbiology, Dr.ALM PGIBMS delivered a lecture on “Hepatitis B Virus and development of anti HBV drugs from Indian Medicinal Plants”.

  • In order to promote the admissions in B.Sc Microbiology, various activities were conducted such as distribution of wish cards to the XII school students of various schools (from velachery to Tambaram), distribution of pamphlets and pouches with information about the college and department was done.

  • The department organized “Exploring the Potentials of Fascinating Lifesciences with a special focus on Microbiology” an Exhibition and Competitions for the students of Lifesciences conducted on 15.10.2014 for schools and 16.10.2014 for colleges at P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology.Dr.Padmakrishnan M.Sc.,Ph.D Associate Professor in Microbiology, Dr.A.L.M PGIBMS, Taramani, Chennai inaugurated the exhibition. About 500 students of 10 different schools visited the exhibition.

  • Department of Microbiology organized a programme of Exhibition cum Competitions for School children entitled “Exploring the Potentials of Fascinating Life Sciences with a Special focus on Microbiology” on 12.12.2012. Prof.Dr.Thangam Menon, Director, Tharamani Campus, University of Madras inaugurated the programme. Students of Microbiology exhibited models, posters and specimens as a part of awareness programme. A power point presentation on “Scope and Opportunities in Life sciences” for the participants was given. Four hundred and twelve students representing eight schools participated in the programme.

  • A three days training programme was arranged for seven students of I M.Sc. Applied Microbiology on “Tools and Techniques in Bioinformatics” at BIOZONE Research Center, Teynampet, Chennai from 14.02.2013 to 16.02.2013.

  • Dr.V.Kaviyarasan, Associate Professor, CAS in Botany, University of Madras gave a seminar on “Mushroom Technology” for the students of Microbiology on 21.02.2013.

  • A one day industrial visit to Fragrances and Flavours, St.Thomas Mount, Chennai was organized on 06.03.2013. The students of B.Sc., M.Sc. and M.Phil. Microbiology and five faculty members visited the Research and Development and production units of the industry.

  • A three days training programmed for eleven students of I M.Sc. Microbiology was organized on “Tools and Techniques in Bioinformatics” at Sai’s Biosciences Research Institute, Kilpauk, Chennai from 20th to 22nd January 2012.

  • Thirty eight students and seven teaching staff of Department of Microbiology went for an industrial visit to Aavin Dairy, Govt. of Tamilnadu, Sholinganallur, Chennai on 26.01.2012.

  • Dr.Mrs. N.Unnamalai, Senior Scientific Officer, Shri Murugappa Chettiar Research Centre, Chennai gave a Guest Seminar on “Biopesticides” for the students of Microbiology on 10th February-2012.

  • Dr.J.Shanmugam, Professor of Microbiology, Shri Manakula Vinayakar Medical College, Pondicherry gave a Guest Seminar on “Biological Warfare and Bioterrorism” for the students of Microbiology on 11th February-2012.

  • Dr.V.Kaviyarasan, Professor, CAS in Botany, University of Madras gave a Guest Seminar on “Bioremediation” for the students of Microbiology on 13th Feb-2012.

  • A two days workshop on “Systematic Medical Bacteriology” was organized for the students of III B.Sc. Microbiology and PG students on 14th& 15th February-2012. Dr.S.Ananthan, Former Professor of Microbiology, University of Madras conducted the workshop as resource person.

  • A two days workshop on “Methods in Clinical Mycology” was organized for the students of III B.Sc. Microbiology on 16th& 17th February-2012. Dr.Mrs.Jayalakshmi, Professor of Microbiology, Madras Medical College conducted the workshop as resource person.

  • Nine students of III B.Sc. Microbiology were trained on “Personality Enrichment” organized in association with Asan Business School on 18th February-2012.

  • A Guest Seminar on “Career Opportunities in Clinical Research” was organized for the students of B.Sc. and M.Sc. Microbiology on 20th February-2012. Experts from Sachika International Consultants, Chennai gave talks on the prospects and opportunities in Clinical Research.

  • Students of III year B.Sc. Microbiology and I M.Sc. Microbiology participated in a five days training programme on “Calibration of Instruments” organized by National Small Industries Corporation Ltd. At NSIC Technical Services Centre, Guindy, Chennai from 21st to 25th February-2012.

  • Dr.M.Elanchezhian, Professor of Microbiology, University of Madras gave a Guest Seminar on “Immunological response to Infectious Diseases” for the students of Microbiology on 21st February-2012.

  • An outreach programme on “Free Blood group Testing Campaign” was organized by the Department of Microbiology at Baynes Memorial Hr.Sec. School, Pallikaranai on 22nd February-2012. 400 school children were benefited from the programme.

  • A two days National Seminar cum Workshop on “Application of Molecular Techniques in Medicine and Industry” was organized on 2nd & 3rd March-2012. Prof. Dr.Thangam Menon, Professor & Head, Dept. of Microbiology, University of Madras inaugurated the programme. Fifty participants from various Colleges participated in the programme.
